Derby: Return Leg

Wazalendo senior made the short trip across town on foot led by their founder Peter J, for the second leg of the Wazalendo derby a week after they hosted the Wazalendo junior team in the first leg.

The first match was a rugby 7s game, Wazalendo senior quickly got the better of the juniors with a try from Mike Nyando, Emmanuel Matibila and Walela. Wazalendo junior got their first consolation try from Lamec Ambetsa in the first half to make the scores 15-5 heading in to the break.

Mike Nyando was on fire and in the second half he completed his hattrick with two stunning tries, showing serious gas and speed to bag the tries on both occasions.

Lamec Ambetsa completed his hattrick as well for the Wazalendo junior team, putting into good use the raw speed that he is known for. Greg Namasaka and Charles were the other scorers as Wazalendo Senior led the Wazalendo junior 35-25 at fulltime.

The next game was a rugby 10s match, and a try by one of the Wazalendo junior forwards and another try by Lamec Ambetsa in each half of the match, was enough to grant Wazalendo junior a 10-0 win.

The last match was a rugby 7s match, between Wazalendo Senior Developmental team vs the Wazalendo junior developmental team. The senior side won 15-10.

Next up is the tour of Kakamega(https://4wazalendorugby.sport.blog/2020/07/03/kakamega-tour/) where the Wazalendo are expected to play some high profile games.

An appeal to Wazalendo well wishers and fans, to kindly help the team financially inorder for them to attend the Kakamega friendlies. This should be done through the Wazalendo treasurer Austin Aunyasi 0723073355, even as the Wazalendo seek for sponsorship.

Partnership Deal

Earlier on this morning, Wazalendo rugby club entered into a partnership agreement with Sense7 life club.

The deal came after Wazalendo founder Peter J held a one hour meeting with Brian Masika, founder of Sense7 Life Club.

Based on the agreement, Sense7 life club will handle the financial aspects of the Wazalendo rugby club. This will entail planning, budgeting and execution of key financial roles.

Sense7 life club will also play an advisory role, advising Wazalendo on the best businesses to venture in.

Wazalendo Derby

The rugby 10s match between Wazalendo senior and Wazalendo junior was preceded by two rugby 7s matches, one between Wazalendo senior A and Wazalendo senior B which ended in a 10-10 draw. Moses, Sean, Mike Ochieng Nyando ‘Rapogi’ and Ian Wanyonyi were all on target for their respective sides.

In the second rugby 7s match, pitting Wazalendo Senior vs Wazalendo junior, Rino Nabutola opened the scoring for the seniors with a massive hit down the left wing and he was gone for the try. Both Rapogi and Ian Wanyonyi were on target as the half ended 15-0 in favour of the seniors.

Bildad Ogeta registered Wazalendo junior’s first try of the match in the second half, showing great strength and speed to score. The game ended 15-5 in favour of Wazalendo senior, who were kept scoreless in the second half.

Things got off to an interesting start, when the rugby 10s match between Wazalendo senior and Wazalendo junior commenced. Bildad Ogeta scoring barely a minute into the match, to get the juniors ahead.

The first half had no other scores, and as the two teams went into the break it was Wazalendo junior that was 5-0 up. Tides changed in the second half and two quick tries by Rapogi and Mike Mare, put the Wazalendo senior back in control of the match. A late lapse in defence gifted Jacob Silali an opportunity to equalise, ending the game at 10 apiece.

Team doctor, Kiprono, did notable work, tending to the injured.

Kakamega Tour

Newly formed Bungoma Patriots rugby club, commonly known as Wazalendo, have announced plans to tour Kakamega county this July where they are expected to hold a series of friendly matches.

Their first stop will be in Mumias, where they will face Mumias RFC/Imboko in the Aseka cup in honour of the late Thomas Aseka.

Their next friendly match is expected to be against Western Bulls at the Bull ring, before they play against Kabras a week later and wrap up their tour of Kakamega.

When reached for comment on why this friendly matches are important, Wazalendo’s interim coach Keith Machio stated that he needs friendlies against very competitive sides, inorder to build his relatively inexperienced side.

Wazalendo Highlights

Bungoma Wazalendo rugby club had a field’s day, when they took to the field for the first time at the Senator Wetangula’s stadium in Nalondo.

Austin Aunyasi on debut and playing in his first rugby match ever, was impressive and did well to make acouple of tackles as well as some good carries.

Glen Mwangi was on target twice, in both occasions outpacing his opponents to land two tries under the post.

Heavy forwards Mike Mare, Rino Nabutola and Kenya Simbas uncapped front row James Wens Wanjala, showed extreme strength dragging atleast three opponents with them per carry.

In Wazalendo’s second match the full force of their scrum, came to effect as they pushed Nalondo’s scrum over ten metres with every scrum.

With the second game tied at two tries apiece, there came a special moment James Wens, younger brother to Wazalendo’s founder Peter J, committed two opponents and released his older brother for the match winning try. Peter J true to his nature, initiated the Wazalendo dance and hallad at himself with the one finger Wazalendo salute, Ken Obel joined in the celebration.

Their third match against Webuye 10s defending champions, Bukembe ended in a 5-5 draw. Bungoma drawing first blood with a well worked try down the left wing landed by James Wens. Bukembe managing to equalise late in the second half.

Young Jimmy and Samson both on debut , showed that the future of Wazalendo is in good hands.

Discent Ekisa was arguably wazalendo’s most valuable player, showing great determination in attack and defence.
